Road Side Chapel

Simple Story:

I received an inquiry in my email for a "Road Side Chapel". I replied back. "What is that?" In the return email it was explained to me that in Europe a Road Side Chapel is a common item.

So ... we began discussions about this project and what it may be. The client then sent me a rough sketch. Through many discussions, I attempted to follow here ideas and suggestions the best I could.

The client said it would be outside her home in her yard in the weather. Pine was preferable - no stain, no paint. There were to be brackets under a little ledge / shelf type of bottom. I checked around and found some pre-fabricated decorative shelf brackets.

The back of the chapel was made using bead board. The roof was initially to be some boards at an angle. At some point it occurred to me that a metallic roof might be nice. Did some looking around and finally thought of Copper. I found some thin sheet stuff through a craft supplier web site and ordered a couple rolls.

When the copper arrived I could see great possibilities. However, I had no idea of how to do this. Nothing new there: I did a bunch of tests. The best test I found was bending the copper to the wood and applying construction adhesive. For the cross I put a little block of wood behind it to "float" it off the back surface and covered it on copper also.

The chapel was complete. It was boxed up sent of to Rhode Island. To the best of my knowledge, it is there and leading a happy life. I did get some photos from the owner showing it in it's new location (see photos below).

The Chapel owner was nice enough to send some photos of it where it now resides - in the garden.
