Compost Bin
Simple Story: Having a couple large gardens and buying soil to suppliment the nutrients that are in the ground made me desire a compost bin. I also have free horse manure so it was a "two for one" deal. Also, the using your resources wisely concept appeals to me. So, I made the one you see above. I studied up what plans I could find about compost bins. The closest to what I wanted was a plan which is listed on my site here under "Browse Projects: Garden items: Compost Bin, click here for a look at that plan. I made mine with 4 x 4 posts instead of 2 x 4's. Also, my top is corrugated plastic instead of wood. Just liked the idea better, could be wood, I wanted the plastic. I think it will hold up better and it's pretty light to lift up. I did not put the "hold up arms" that their plan had. I could even now but I don't need them. I only lift the top to remove boards or put boards back in for access and it's only for a couple seconds so I'm happy with how mine is. I could certainly put some on yours if that's what you want. I wanted a 3 bin plan so mine has 3. Just too produce more end soil and not have to turn the stuff as much as I would with a 2 bin. With this three bin I just pile it in and let it stand for quite a while, then I move it to the next bin, let it stand quite a while and then again to the 3rd bin. People can and do get all scientific about the ingredients, how often to turn, etc. I don't. When it's "a long time later" I just till it into the soil. Good enough for me. The fronts of the 3 bins are boards with spacers attached to their bottoms to allow air flow through the bins. The slide down "tracks" and thus when I need to add something or take the stuff out, I remove however many boards to allow myself access. See photo above, I removed the top board off the bin closest to your view in the photo and leaned it against the bin. Only one photo of this project. Do not think anyone is too interested in close up details. However, if I'm wrong let me know and I'll get more pictures. |
