Front Yard Design and Landscaping Simple Story:
I have a few things in place already (Photos below, click here.). First, a couple of trees in the front yard were removed for safety (near roof and old trees) and to open the space. Next, the old board fencing was removed and a new post and rail fence put in. Then, I added a square entrance deck area as the previous entrance was just a normal sidewalk - not very wide or attractive and if a few folks arrived, there was not a lot of room and the deck is a excellent place for shoes, a planter box and bench perhaps at a later time. After that, the front planter box was way past prime and falling apart. I made a new one and it's been installed. Our home was painted a new color and new accent color. A Trash Bin Corral has been made.
I am pretty sure I will add some mulched planting areas near the drive and along the front of the house. I'm pretty sure I'll then edge that stuff with some free form rock treatments to add texture, color and interest on top of making the entire front yard "mowable" without the current need to edge many areas. Also, some lighting and some kind of focal point. The focal point - not sure about that. I keep getting ideas and changing my mind. It may be a water feature. It may be a large rock. It may be a pile of medium sized rocks. It may be a wishing well. It may be a built up planting area. Just not sure yet. You (and I) will have to check back here later to see what I finally decide to do on that. I am also considering adding some electric to the front area for low voltage lighting and pond - or I may not and just use solar lights and no pond. I may add some water out front (no electric or water near front yard now) for water feature and eventual lawn watering system. Or I may not and just run a drip / misting system for the front plantings. I certainly do not want to have to go around and water all these new plants once I put them in - it needs to be a turn on or a time thing. Also, right now, I believe I will run a stone pathway off the front decking over to the side of our house which is a common transportation point for us. We always end up walking around that way to the pool or back to my shop or out to the horse pasture. I think it will look nice and add a needed function.
