Portable Writing Desk Simple Story: Two long standing factors brought about this project. 1) I liked the project when I saw the plans years ago and 2) my daughter is a creative girl who also is very organized. The two fit together. So I finally got at this project and did it. The plan I used is in a couple of my books in my library, thus, you may have seen this item elsewhere made by others. I followed the plan fairly closely but altered the height of the desk a little to allow it to function well as my daughter gets a little bigger. Also, the top is a little wider than the original. I put in an extra pencil holder up top also. And, as I commonly do on my projects, I rounded off edges more than the plan called for - just the way I like it and I feel it looks better, it chips edges less and is safer in that the rounded leg bottoms will not scrape my daughters legs as she manuvers the desk when using it. Made of cheap pine, stained cherry and a semi-gloss poly finish. The plan was fairly simple and all went well with the exception of the hinged top. I messed up on it's initial mounting placement and had to remove it, make a new piece of wood to go into position to hold the new placement of the hinge and top. That went well also and the extra piece is actually a nice, unplanned detail I now enjoy and would consider building it in on any future projects involving a similar need. It was the first project I made using biscuits also. I saved up my coins and when I had enough money I bought myself a biscuit cutter which opens up a number of new joint options on this and future projects. Very cool, very happy to now have such methods within my capabilities. My daughter loves the desk and uses it quite often which makes me happy!
