Horse Pasture Fencing

pasture gate

We moved here to Citrus County, Florida for "country living". My wife always wanted a horse. Well, we got one. That called for many things, including a pasture fenced in.

I fenced in our first pasture about four years ago. It works fine and is still working but I was "green" about horses. It could be better. A couple years ago, we fenced in a second pasture. I can't claim perfection (never can), but the second one is much better - very nice in my opinion.

This time we used high quality fencing material. Red top, no climb horse fencing. Wow, what a difference. Costs more but it really holds up nice. Horse feet don't get caught in it. It can withstand a little leaning and not show the worse for it. I had a pretty descent size tree fall on the back stretch of it. Just held the tree up. I got the tree out and it is barely dented.

Also, second pasture includes the "walk thru" which is very nice for easy in and out. A horse of course can not fit through, but we can. It can get pretty old opening and closing gates all the time. The electric on the fence is solar powered but we don't even turn it on any more. The first fence has cheaper fencing which is easy to lean and the horse knows it and abuses it. We had to add the electric almost immediately after putting that fence up to keep the horse off the fence. This one, the horse does not bother it. When I do my next one I will use the good fencing and not include electric. If I'm wrong I could easily add it later but it appears to be un-needed at least with our horse.

Fence construction. I make mine a bit better than many probably would. Extra nails in the posts holding the fence that someone else would just skip to hurry up matters. Cementing of all corner and next to corner posts. Also cemented in are the gate posts, walk thru posts and the posts next to them. Bracing at the corners. Nice straight lines. I just want my fences nice. They're just fences to hold horses but I like 'em looking good (and they're strong).

Most folks with horses do this themselves I think. I did. But, if you can't or don't want to, I could do it. I think "professional" fence companies doe it cheaper than me but I think I take more care and make an extra effort as it is my work - not a job - that I offer to you.
