Picture Frame

Completed Picture Frame
I am in the long process of decorating and making most every item in my daughter's room. Her room is a "horse" theme. She loves horses and we have horses (or are they hers?). So, here is a picture frame that is in her room. The photo is a enlargement of one of our horses on canvas. I will be making a couple more frames and a bunch of candle holders to all be on her wall.

Other aspects of her room are already in place which use rustic (cheap) pine with a waterbased dark stain as you see on this frame - the dark part. So that was pre-determined by other items. The "trim" on this piece is Kimberly Pine with a light stain. A very nice combination. Looks great! We love it. The lighter Kimberly Pine wood is used on other items as a secondary accent also.

A couple more notes: The frame is large and heavy. Heavy duty support and mounting is included (see back view). The photo (stretched canvas) had to be inset in the frame and with all the hardware on the back and because I wanted to, the frame is suspened off the wall 3/4 inch and thus floats a bit off the wall. This is a common technique I like and use often. Also there is the variation of front surface heights in the frame design. The lighter Kimberly pine is raised about 3/8 inches higher than the surface of the dark pine. The photo is inset about 3/8 inch lower than the dark frame. Thus, the various surface levels and mounting off the wall create some dimensional interest to the piece. Final finish is satin.

As usual, as I went through the project, additional ideas and accessories come into play. As you can see in various photos, I also made a couple of candle holders for each side of the photo and made some barb wire art to hang above it.

Barbed Wire Note:
I made the various pieces of barbed wire art during a hurricane in 2004. The electricity went out (for 8 days) so I could not do many things. During the worst of the hurricane I sat out on a bench in front of my shop and twisted up this stuff. I made about five or six items. You see a couple in the photos below. They can be changed in her room, sometimes the hat is under her name, sometimes the boot, etc.
