Post and Round Rail Fencing

Simple Story:

rustic fence

Finshed Fencing
This project part of my overall new design and landscaping for our front yard and entire property.

I really liked this post and rail fencing when I began looking into the concept of our overall property and the look I wanted it to have. For us, here in the country with horses and lots of animals, it just seemed right and fit my taste.

It's a little expensive and a little more difficult than some fencing but good things often take a little extra effort. I had to purchase a special "tenon" tool to allow me to cut these posts to the odd lengths I needed at junction points and recreate the required tenon to make it all fit.

The project started by removing the old post and board fencing which was around the front area of our home when we purchased it. It was quite old, quite worn, warped and many boards falling apart or having been replaced. It was just time.

Then, just put in the new fencing. I dug each post hole by hand and worked it all out so that I had two walk-thru areas in the center and on the right. At these junction points, I cut the rails to the required lengths which created shorter rails at the opening - looked good (in my opinion). All the posts were cemented under ground for strength and stability. I have children and as expected, the rails are great seats, tight wires and jumping points.

So far, holding up just great. Parts of this fence have been up for four or five years with no problems. I did the side of the house years ago. Now, the front is in place as you see. Eventually I will do the other side of the house to complete this post and rail aspect of my design. All along I am stopping long runs with walk thru areas which are great for walking thru and if I ever need to fix or replace a broken rail - I just have to deal with small runs rather than one continuous run. With this tennon fencing, a long run with a break in the middle - that's a difficult thing to fix.

This project and my display of it here on my site is just coming together. Here, I am going to try to find a "before" photo and perhaps a few more shots of this fencing to put on the site here. Pardon my dust.
