My Comments:

Lots of style here. My daughter likes it too. The plywood, might want to do something about that, using better wood. If your going to paint it, plywood would be fine. The decorative elements (square tiles at 45 degrees here) could be something else. Two tones, if you wish. If not the whole piece could be a consistent color treatment. Curved bottoms, maybe, maybe angular or straight lines. Size, it's your size. Maybe a few different sizes to make a set.
